Socket artists selected for Sustainable Chemistry Commission

Socket artists Jane Pepper, Nicola Rae, Janet Turville and Helen Williams are amongst 10 artists selected to make work for the 2016 opening of the Glaxo-Smith-Kline Sustainable Chemistry Carbon Neutral Laboratory on the Jubilee Campus of Nottingham University.

The commission is an initiative from the School of Chemistry to mark and respond to the fire of September 2014 that totally destroyed the nearly-complete lab building. In the immediate aftermath of the fire small groups of artists were granted accompanied access to the fire damaged site, and invited to submit proposals for artwork.

The successful proposals are for work in a range of media in response to the fire, including the experience of visiting the site and the materials gathered, and will be completed in time for display in the reconstructed building when it opens next year.
